It was by far the best trip we have ever taken to the Washington DC area. Students, parents, teachers and I all agree it was the best time of the year to travel in this area. We appreciated the wonderful weather. It was warm and sunny, not hot and humid like some of our travels to the area in the spring. The fall foliage was breathtaking especially in the Harpers Ferry area. One of the best parts of traveling in the fall was the glorious fact that there were no lines and the museums and monuments were not over crowded.
The most rewarding part of our fall trip for me as a social studies teacher is how my students responded to our studies when we returned home to our classroom. I must admit that I was leery of taking my students on the trip before we had studied the history of the events and areas we would visit. As a result of our fall trip, history is now something very alive and meaningful. Students have come to understand that they are part of the history of their family, community, state and country. Our discussions are often laced with their experiences and knowledge which they gained during our trip. They are more engaged in their learning because of their experiences.
